WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The U.S. Supreme Court is set to take up a case concerning South Carolina and Medicaid payments.

The justices will hear arguments in Medina versus Planned Parenthood South Atlantic which also concern access to reproductive health care.

The question before the U.S. Supreme Court concerns whether Medicaid patients can choose specific providers.

Medina versus Planned Parenthood South Atlantic centers on a South Carolina woman on Medicaid who specifically wanted to receive health care from Planned Parenthood.

In 2018, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster banned state Medicaid payments to abortion clinics….just one of the many health care services provided by Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood and patient Julie Edwards sued – saying that Medicaid recipients such as Edwards may seek health care from any quote, qualified provider, including Planned Parenthood.

Furthermore, they note that the Medicaid Act is quote, clear and unambiguous in conferring a privately enforceable right.
