Deputies shed light on chase that turned deadly in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - An incident report from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is shedding more light on a multi-county police chase that turned deadly on Monday night.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office says Joseph Mobley, 47, was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. Monday.

The Georgia State Patrol says in the preliminary findings of the crash, Mobley was alert and conscious immediately following the crash.

When Mobley was waiting to be taken out of the vehicle, he ingested narcotics, according to GSP.

Mobley then went unconscious and was pronounced dead on scene.

The chase started in Columbia County, according to officials.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, at 10:25 p.m., a deputy was dispatched to Krystal’s, located at 256 Bobby Jones Expressway, in reference to a welfare check.

Dispatch informed deputies that Mobley had ed out behind the wheel in the parking lot.

When deputies made with Mobley, they say Mobley appeared intoxicated. The deputy also says he noticed a burnt tinfoil on Mobley`s lap.

According to deputies, Mobley accelerated away and the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle as it turned south onto Bobby Jones Expressway.

According to the incident report, Mobley exited I-520 onto Windsor Spring Road, then traveled on Rushing Road towards Peach Orchard Road.

The incident report states Columbia County deputies followed Mobley onto Peach Orchard Road at Rosier Road, then back onto I-520 eastbound.

2 Edgefield County men arrested for child sex crime related charges

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two men for charges related to child sex crimes.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit on I-520 just past Mike Padgett Highway.

Richmond County deputies performed a PIT maneuver and the pursuit ended, according to Columbia County deputies.

The coroner’s office says Mobley lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the guardrail.

The GSP is investigating the accident.
