Finding Solutions: Women Build program set to build 14th home
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Women helping women - no one does it alone.
That’s the theme for the Aiken County Women Build program.
They’re a part of Habitat for Humanity and since 2005, a large group of female volunteers have been hard at work constructing homes for families in need.
The group needs your help as they get ready to build their 14th home.
If you’re a woman with a heart to give back, the Aiken County Women Build program could be a great fit for you.
Finding Solutions: Date set for 3rd annual Augusta Duck Dash
It’s time to get ready for the 3rd annual Augusta Duck Dash!
“The whole idea was to engage and empower women to learn as well as to get involved in building. It’s not to exclude men, it’s just to engage more women in the habitat process,” said Judy Sennett, co-chair, Women Build committee.
The first home these women built was back in 2006. Since then, they kept with the mission and have completed 13 homes with the 14th set to start this spring.
“There is a lot of excitement. We have a lot of Women Build volunteers who return year after year. We don’t do a lot of publicity because word of mouth happens and we draw about 40-50 volunteers over the course of the build,” said Sennett.
The Women Build committee coordinates fundraisers, recruits volunteers and hosts building skills clinics, a couple of which are happening this month where women will learn how to build a small structure.
This helps prepare them for the real thing.
Finding Solutions: Local organization providing guidance to young ladies
An organization centered around helping our youth is getting ready to host a workshop specifically for girls.
“We build a small 4X4 foot structure with three walls. We build a foundation on the bottom. Then we build the three walls, nail them together, and then put exterior sheathing on the outside. Those skills are the basis of almost everything we need to do in the home,” said Mindi Adams, co-chair, Women Build committee.
The homes built are usually single-story, ranch-style homes of about 1,100 square feet.
“It is a very exciting opportunity for all of us and we get an opportunity to give back to the community and help a family in need get their forever home. It’s very exciting,” said Adams.
The group is still fundraising for this home and is always in need of volunteers and community .
They hope to start construction in May.
