Orangeburg County district breaks ground for new school

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Orangeburg County School District hosted a groundbreaking for a new elementary school Monday morning.

The groundbreaking for R.E. Howard Elementary School happened at 11 a.m. at 1255 Belleville Road.

State Superintendent Ellen Weaver, district leaders and local officials were in attendance, including some students.

The South Carolina Senate has ed a bill targeted at the state’s growing power needs.

The district also unveiled the new school’s mascot, Wag the Wolverine.

“This is a beautiful representation of the priority we put on education here in Orangeburg County,” Weaver said during the conference. She spoke of how the school district has remained resilient and persistent in the face of district consolidation.

“Orangeburg is only going up,” Weaver concluded.

Officials said they hope R.E. Howard Elementary can “serve as a symbol of progress, unity, and the district’s continued commitment to educational excellence.”
