WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Tuesday, President Donald Trump promised to unleash the potential of the energy sector, starting with a pair of executive orders concerning coal.

Even as demand for electricity rises, environmentalists remain concerned about increasing the use of coal for power plants.

President Donald Trump has long advocated for the coal industry. Tuesday he used his executive power to accelerate the development of what the White House calls new coal technologies.

Reversing policies put in place by his Democratic predecessors, President Trump in the East Room g an executive order that will permit older coal-fired power plants – due to be phased out – to continue producing electricity.

“We’ll streamline permitting. We will end the government bias against coal, and we’re going to unlock the sweeping authorities of the Defense Production Act, to turbocharge coal mining in America.”

The President said rising domestic demand for electricity is the reason that he’s taking this executive action.

Separately, the President signed an order that will remove barriers to coal mining on federal lands.

“Under this order, I’m also directing Secretary Wright to use billions of dollars in federal funding to invest in the next generation of coal technology, which is an amazing technology in of getting the full potential of coal and also doing it a very clean, environmental way.”

The U.S. coal industry, which has seen a decades-long decline in coal production, applauded the President’s action. But environmental groups argue that doubling down on coal is bad for the environment and will set the U.S. economy back decades.
