AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The 16th hole has become iconic at Augusta National Golf Club – for a lot of reasons.

First, it’s become pivotal in determining who wears a green jacket on Sunday.

Just ask Sergio Garcia.

But before the shots start to count and things take a turn for the serious, you can count on 16 being seriously fun.

Its official name is Redbud, but at Augusta National, it’s known for two other words: “skip it!”

It’s where the golfers like to skip the ball across the water.

You can even buy hats that say “skip it.”

It’s not just a favorite spot for patrons. August Campbell, 9, was there to cheer on a family member playing in the Masters.

“Yeah, so, my sister, she married Sam Burns, which was really cool,” he said.

Also really cool is watching his brother-in-law skip it with Masters defending champion Scottie Scheffler – even though all of this feels a little surreal.

“It’s like outside of golf, he’s just like a normal guy to me. He’s like just my brother-in-law. He’s like somebody who I’m just related to. And he’s my friend, basically,” August said.

Which is what Wednesday at the Masters is all about: family, friends, family who are friends, and friends who are family.

All enjoying a fun tradition you simply cannot skip.

The roars on 16 will still be there on tournament days – they’ll just be different.

That’s because 16 is the most aced hole at the Masters. And when that happens, the gallery rivals even a college football stadium at times.
