AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Warmer days are ahead, and that means more time outdoors and more time in or on the water.

Kayaking along the Savannah River is a staple for Augusta residents and visitors.

With the summer quickly approaching, it’s important to know how to have fun safely.

“Don’t get near the banks, you know, stay away from anything that’s down and just basically stay in the middle,” said Steve.

They also recommend going with a guide if you are inexperienced or nervous about kayaking.

“Out there, the rapids are going to be kind of tricky, so we have a guide,” said Steve. “If it’s a big enough group, we’ll have a couple of guides go with you, one in the front and one in the back.”

Some other safety tips are always wear a life jacket, pack water for your trip, know your route and check the forecast before you leave.

“Rain, obviously a thunderstorm,” said Steve. “Some people won’t go out if it’s raining a little bit. I take the radar constantly.”
