Augusta now has 2 Whataburgers in easy driving distance
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Attention, Whataburger fans of the CSRA: There are now two locations of the cult-favorite fast-food restaurant less than an hour away.
The Texas-based chain just opened a location at 5440 Platt Springs Road in Lexington, S.C. – 57 minutes from Augusta, according to Google Maps.
That comes on the heels of the February opening of one at 888 S. Lake Drive in Lexington – just off Interstate 20 and only 53 minutes from Augusta.

In the past year, the chain has also opened locations in Columbia and Irmo.
On the other side of Augusta, the company has been expanding aggressively in metro Atlanta, where it plans 50 locations in the next few years. The closest Georgia locations to Augusta are in Eatonton and Covington, both a little over an hour and a half away.
Are there plans for one closer to the CSRA or even in Augusta?
Not at this time, the company tells News 12.
We’ve been asking them that question for a couple of years, and the answer is still no, senior public relations specialist Miranda Grubbs said Tuesday.

Until this year, no female soldiers had entered the Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning. Soldiers participating must all be Army Rangers, and they compete in more than 30 events.

“There are no new locations closer to the Augusta area currently slated,” she wrote in an email. “The recent opening in Lexington will be the nearest one for now — but we’ll be sure to keep you updated if anything changes!”
The South Lake Drive location is open 24 hours and almost visible from the interstate. So if you’re driving through town – perhaps on your way from the Charlotte airport or making a weekend run to Trader Joe’s – it’s an easy stop while you get gas from either of the two stations across the street.
The Platt Springs Road location will also be open 24 hours, every day except Christmas Day.
Whataburger got its start in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950, and has spread across the middle of the country, but has only started moving this far east in recent years.

The current CEO, Ed Nelson, happens to be a South Carolina native.
Many longtime Augustans may an East Coast burger chain with a similar name, What-A-Burger, which had locations here.
That was a whole different company, and the two chains only learned of each other years after they were both in operation.
