ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The LaGrange Police Department says 14-year-old Demarrion Carter was playing basketball in his yard on Friday when he was shot and killed.

“I am still in shock and disbelief. I absolutely have no words,” said Khamani Ehilpotts, a friend and mentor of Carter’s.

“He was just a good kid, and didn’t deserve this,” said Damien Greer, another mentor of Carter’s.

Carter went to LaGrange High School and enjoyed basketball, fishing and the Empowerment 3D mentorship program. That’s where he met Greer five years ago.

“He called me ‘Pops.’ He just did,” said Greer.

Greer woke up to the news of Carter’s ing and rushed to be with his family. They’ve been told by police this was likely a targeted attack, which makes the shooting even more baffling.

“He don’t have no enemies,” said Greer.

Hundreds of South Carolinians – maybe even more – face pending criminal charges for actions that are legal under current state law. That could change.

“Why did it happen? Who did it? You know, we don’t know,” said Jerome Cofield, the president of Empowerment 3D.

Carter’s first grade teacher has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for his funeral expenses.

“To know Demarrion was to love him. He was truly one of a kind‚” said Jeanette Wilson, Carter’s former teacher.
