(Gray News) - Jack in the Box plans to shut down dozens of its locations and is also exploring selling its Mexican fast food brand, Del Taco.

According to a CNN report, the 74-year-old fast food chain is expected to shut down 150 to 200 of its “underperforming” stores. About 80 to 120 locations are expected to close by the end of the year.

This constitutes 10% of Jack in the Box’s 2,200 locations nationwide. A list of affected restaurants has not been made available.

Jack in the Box CEO Lance Tucker said that the closures will help “accelerate cash flow and pay down debt.” He revealed that the company’s overall goal is to pay off $300 million in debt in the next two years.

The company is also exploring “strategic alternatives” for Del Taco. Jack in the Box bought the fast food chain three years ago. CNN reported that the purchase has been riddled with problems, with Del Taco facing rising inflation and tough competition from other chains such as Taco Bell.

Tucker said in a call that it “makes sense” to sell Del Taco.

Sales at Jack in the Box fell nearly 4.5% during the second quarter of 2025.
