Mother pleads guilty to killing special needs daughter after the girl’s mummified body was found in a closet
ATLANTA, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) - A 29-year-old woman in Georgia will spend the rest of her life in prison after she pleaded guilty to killing her daughter by abandoning her in a closet.
Alondra Hobbs was convicted of two counts of malice murder, two counts of felony murder and two counts of first degree cruelty to children.
She was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole on Wednesday, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office.
Officers with the DeKalb County Police Department responded to Hidden Valley Apartments on Misty Waters Drive in unincorporated Decatur on June 25, 2023.
The response came after an unidentified person called 911 to report a child that had been found dead inside one of the units’ closets.
The district attorney’s office said officers checked the location and found the mummified body of 7-year-old Alivia Jordan still strapped into a stroller.
Police said they learned Hobbs had moved out of the apartment months earlier.
Hobbs later itted putting the girl in the closet before she left in an interview with officers.
Hobbs said she abandoned her daughter because her life was “too much,” the district attorney’s office said.
The mother said Alivia was autistic, and medical records showed the girl also suffered from cerebral palsy-related seizures.
In a statement, DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston condemned Hobbs’ actions.
“Alivia Jordan did not deserve the slow, painful and lonely death she suffered at the hands of her mother,” Boston said. “I extend my deepest condolences to her family, and I hope that they take some comfort in knowing Alondra Hobbs is being held able for her actions.”
