WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The U.S. Drug Enforcement istration is encouraging people to get rid of expired and unwanted prescription drugs as it holds National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

The agency holds two take back days each year.

According to the DEA, there are collection sites through the country where people can safely discard prescription drugs they don’t need to ensure the medication is not abused or sold.

“Like you would take expired food out of your refrigerator, things that are growing the refrigerator, it’s not any different than doing that,” said Kathy Keough, Executive Director of the National Association of State Controlled Substances Authorities.

Though Saturday is officially the national take back day, people can safely discard their prescription drugs at any time. Many police stations and drug stores have boxes for safe disposal.
