NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - It’s time to get outside and enjoy nature, and we know that living in the CSRA, there are many spots to do that, including trails like the Greeneway in North Augusta.

You’re able to enjoy this scenic route thanks to a three-man team.

The city of North Augusta is finding solutions in creating a group that is dedicated to the upkeep and appearance of the Greeneway.

These men may look familiar to you if you spend a lot of time out on the Greeneway.

It’s no secret that performing R correctly can save lives, and Wellstar MCG Health Nurse and R Educator Shawn Kneece is demonstrating how to perform R.

“On a daily basis we take care of the Greeneway, the restrooms along the greeneway, the dog park, also Palmetto Parkway on the other side of town we take care of and is a great option for cyclists to go ride their bikes,” said Jake Stephens, Greeneway coordinator with North Augusta Parks and Recreation.

Stephens, Cody Hayes and Craig Chavous make up the city of North Augusta’s Greeneway team.

This group was formed over a month ago after the city realized they needed more than just one person dedicated to maintaining the trail so many of us love.

“With the hurricane, I think we see how we really need more time and resources on the Greeneway, and we are really happy to have it open, and it’s not going to be what it was before, a little less trees and more on the side,” said Stephens. “Hopefully, with spring and summer,r a lot of that will fill in and be different, but hopefully better.”

For Hayes, he says it’s great working at the spot he grew up around.

April is Limb Loss Awareness Month, and our local veterans beat the rain on Thursday morning to participate in adaptive cycling.

“I used the Greeneway for years and years and always had somewhere I could go stay out of trouble and whatnot,” said Hayes, a groundsworker with North Augusta Parks and Recreation. “Now, I get to be the guy who’s maintaining that and that everyone else has a clean and safe place to come.”

If you’ve been out on the Greeneway recently, you may have noticed more benches. It’s something the Greeneway team is always adding, thanks to the community who purchases them.

“Anytime you walk along the Greeneway, you’ll notice people sitting down and almost every single bench all day,” said Hayes. We really enjoy getting to put these out and giving people an opportunity to give back in a way they see fit, and the benches are a way for them to do that.”

They say having a place where you can ride your bike and get to shops and restaurants is unique.

“It’s really an asset for the citizens, and for me, that’s why I love working on it and providing that space for people,” said Stephens.

The men tell us the community can help them by not leaving trash along the Greeneway.
