Former prisons director named U.S. attorney for South Carolina

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has appointed former SCDC director Bryan P. Stirling as the United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has appointed former South Carolina Department of Corrections Director Bryan P. Stirling as the United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina.

He will be replacing acting U.S Attorney Brook B. Andrews, who had been in the position since Adair Boroughs was removed from her position by the Trump istration in February.

“Director Bryan Stirling is widely recognized as the best corrections director in the country,” said Gov. Henry McMaster. ”His relentless spirit has turned SCDC into a model for other states to follow.“

Gov. Kemp is expected to sign two major bills aimed at advancing educational opportunities and growing Georgia’s workforce.

Stirling took the oath of office in a private ceremony Monday afternoon at the U.S. District Courthouse.

The newly-appointed attorney most recently served as director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections for 11 years, where he had been the longest-serving prison director in the country.

Before ing the correctional system, Stirling served as Deputy Attorney General for nearly six years. He served Governor Nikki Haley as her Chief of Staff from October 2012 to September 2013.

Lexington School District 2 to provide , resources after fatal bus crash

Lexington School District Two is set to return to class Monday, two weeks after a fatal bus crash carrying students from a field trip.

As U.S. Attorney, Stirling will oversee federal criminal prosecutions and civil litigation involving the United States in the District of South Carolina. He will lead a dedicated team of 120 prosecutors and professionals with offices located in Columbia, Charleston, Florence, and Greenville.

Joel Anderson, who has served as SCDC’s Deputy Director for Operations since 2019, will serve as acting director until someone else is appointed.

“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to lead the men and women at the Department of Corrections and help transform the agency into a place where incarcerated people are returned to society safely with real second chances,” said Stirling. “I look forward to continuing to serve the people of South Carolina and pledge to uphold the high standards set by those who came before me. It is my honor to leave the South Carolina Department of Corrections in the very capable hands of Joel Anderson.”
