Fort Jackson identifies soldier found dead during training

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Fort Jackson has revealed the identity of a soldier who died during training last week.

The soldier was identified as 22-year-old Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez, an active-duty soldier in basic combat training.

Officials said Perez was from Anchorage, Alaska, and was assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment.

“Losing a teammate affects us all,” said Fort Jackson Commander, Maj. Gen. Daryl O. Hood. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their family as well as the cadre and fellow trainees.

Fort Jackson said that after the death, the unit conducted a 48-hour training stand-down and provided resources to the family and of the unit as they grieve and process the loss.
