GLADSTONE, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - A 19-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of his 6-week-old son, according to police in Oregon.

On April 20, Gladstone police were notified that a child had been itted to Randall Children’s Hospital with a severe brain injury.

Police arrested 19-year-old Maliki Skutley, the boy’s father, for first-degree assault after their initial investigation.

The boy, Paxton Schuler, then died April 23.

Skutley was eventually indicted on two counts of second-degree murder, in addition to the assault charge.

Clackamas County court documents show that the assault took place on April 16 and that Skutley was “deliberately cruel” to the boy during the attack.

According to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s office, Paxton was left in Skutley’s care while the boy’s mother was at work during the attack.

Skutley and Paxton’s mother were living at the Budget Inn in Gladstone.

A police investigation found that the child’s death was caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain as a result of blunt force trauma or extreme pressure.

The investigation remains ongoing, but anyone with information is urged to the Gladstone Police Department at 503-557-2797.

The family of the 6-week-old started a fundraiser to help pay for medical and funeral costs.
