Students recognized at Youth of the Year awards luncheon
The Augusta Exchange Club hosted its annual Youth of the Year luncheon on Thursday, with students from Richmond and Columbia County schools recognized.
“Tacos and tequilas. So it’s our kickoff to Cinco de Mayo. So lots of food trucks, lots of beverage trucks. We’re doing a friendly competition, best Taco, Best Margarita. We’ve got salsa lessons. We got a mariachi band, Free bowl ride. It’s just a fun night for the family,” said Janet Wheatley, Columbia County Parks and Recreation Programs event manager.
“When we walked up, we were like, oh, it’s busier than what we thought it would,” said Makenzie Bell, event goer.
“Yeah, I was not expecting this big of a turnout, so it’s good,” said Sarah Jones, event goer.
Reelin’ With Riley: Fishing at Savannah River Shoals
In this week’s episode of Reelin’ With Riley, Riley is headed to Savannah River Shoals, a beautiful stretch of our Savannah River that hasn’t seen many anglers since Hurricane Helene.

“Like you don’t want to go do anything like nightlife, you want to go do things during the day, where like this fun and the kids can come,” said Jones.
“It’s pretty good. I mean, it’s very comparable to last year’s event. We’ve got a lot more lines, I thinkthan we had last year. So that’s good. I think that’s a good thing. I don’t know if everybody enjoys waiting in them, but I think the reward is at the end,” said Wheatley.
When we came here in 1998, we really didn’t have anything like nothing that represented our community, and now little by little, the county is bringing these types of events for us, it’s important for me because it’s bringing a little bit of our culture for everyone. It’s a little bit more fun,” said Venessa San Martin, vendor.
