Students at local child-care center celebrate their longtime cook

As a part of School Hero Lunch Day, students at a local childcare center are honoring their cook, who has worked there for 35 years.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Students at a local child-care center are honoring their longtime cook as part of School Hero Lunch Day Friday.

Vonceil Butler has been working at the child-care network for 35 years, preparing meals and snacks every day for 180 students.

Kimberly-Clark is announcing the expansion of its Beech Island facility. The addition of the 1.1 million square feet will add to the already largest Kimberly-Clark operation.

The day recognizes those who keep children nourished.

The school surprised the cook and teacher with a homemade banner and their favorite cake.

This academic year, the GHSA is using a power ratings system, which includes the use of a math model that ranks teams based on game scores. It helps seed playoff teams from A Division I to 3A. But it isn’t foolproof, we saw that with girls' basketball this season.

“Made me want to cry, made me want to shout, the joy that they thought about little ol’ me, so it’s just shocking and I thank god for everyone and I appreciate it. It means a lot knowing that somebody cares,” said Butler.

She says she’s always wanted to help children, especially at the beginning of their lives before they enter the world.

“I always wanted to teach and work with children, help children to learn, to be ready when they get out in the world. This is where it starts in the daycare when they are four years old, this is where they start, and 6 weeks old, so I just thank god for being here,” said Butler.
