Young missionary on bicycle dies in hit-and-run crash, church says
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Gray News) — An 18-year-old Mormon missionary was killed in a crash on Thursday evening.
According to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder Aleki Langi died after a driver lost control of their vehicle and veered onto a sidewalk and hit him.
“It is with much sadness that we share with you that a tragic accident in North Carolina has claimed the life of a young missionary,” church representatives shared.
The church confirmed that a second missionary also suffered minor injuries in the crash that occurred on Beatties Ford Road.
Witnesses reported seeing the missionaries on their bikes before getting struck by the vehicle.
Multiple outlets reported that the driver, who was not immediately identified by police, took off from the scene following the collision.
Church leaders said Langi began his missionary service in March and was on a temporary reassignment in Charlotte while awaiting a visa to serve in Jamaica.
“We extend our deepest condolences and love to Elder Langi’s family, friends, and fellow missionaries during this difficult time,” the church shared. “We pray that they will each feel the Savior’s comfort and peace as they mourn his ing and honor his dedicated missionary service.”
