WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - An Ohio woman in her 90s says she has received letters telling her to leave her apartment, despite her continuing to pay rent.

“If I were a person who didn’t pay my rent, I could understand it, but I haven’t missed paying my rent,” Alice Billingsley said.

According to Billingsley, she has been hit with a letter from Ohaven Management Group LLC, demanding she leave the property in a matter of days.

The 92-year-old says the building she lives in at Highland Woods has failed multiple inspections from the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority.

Billingsley claims that after another failure last summer, she found out months later that the portion of the rent covered by CHMA was being withheld until there was proof of corrections.

”They don’t want to fix her refrigerator. They don’t want to do repairs. They don’t want to fill out her paperwork. Where is she left with? What is she left with?” Billingsley’s goddaughter, Mieshawn Singleton, said.

After 16 years at the apartment complex, Billingsley says they expect her to leave following years of faithfully paying her rent.

Singleton said she has been helping her godmother through the ordeal, but to make matters worse, management has ignored their requests for months, letting damage in the bathroom and kitchen go unattended.

In early April, Singleton says Billingsley’s fridge broke and stayed broken for weeks.

Singleton said she went out of pocket to buy and put in a new fridge so her godmother would have somewhere to keep her insulin.

CMHA is helping get Billingsley set up in a new home, but the family said they still want answers and problems addressed.

Staff at the leasing office shared that a judge ordered Ohaven to give up management of the property, and Riparian Management is in the process of taking over the apartments.

Staff noted that violations triggered the transfer, and left behind was a laundry list of work to catch up on.

The office staff said they would be following up on Billingsley’s situation.

Some residents at the complex say they have noticed things improving around the apartments over the past few weeks.
