Local watch party for the Kentucky Derby held in Aiken
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - There was quite a celebration around the Kentucky Derby at Bruce’s Field in Aiken.
It’s part of two weeks of celebration from the Aiken County Horse Park Foundation that includes the Kentucky Derby.
While the races are exciting, the career of a thoroughbred racehorse is short.
Columbia County Deputy Brandon Sikes’ funeral: How to watch, pay final respects
The funeral will be Monday for a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was killed in a shooting April 26 on Interstate 20.

We heard from the CEO of the Aiken Horse Park Foundation on how they are helping prepare horses for the next stage of their careers.
“Typically, thoroughbreds will race for three or four years, and then, of course, they’re gonna go on and live for many more years. There, it’s called the retired racehorse program, and they’re here. They will help repurpose and teach them how to become fulfilling and successful in other careers. Hunters, jumpers, dressage trail horses, and it’s very important. It’s valuable because if there isn’t another career for those horses, there’s not a lot that can happen to them that is good,” said Tara Bostwick.
The proceeds from Saturday’s party went towards the Aiken Equine Rescue.
