Lady Pack remains sole soccer team in GHSA state playoffs
EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Two area soccer teams were left standing in the elite eight, but only one would continue on Monday evening.
Greenbrier girls soccer played in their third consecutive GHSA Elite Eight. Ranked as the No. 15 team in the state, the Pack was up against Lassiter, No. 10.
The Packs’ season came to a premature end at this stage a year ago. This year, heading into their meeting with the Trojans the Pack came in riding a nine-game win streak, six of which came from shutouts.
Greenbrier would stay scoreless through their meeting with Lassiter for a majority of their match. Just under the seven minute mark, a throw-in by Presley McDermott was received by Sara Wahl. Wahl turned it to Natalie Heckathorn just outside the box, and in she fired.
It would be the first, and only goal of the match.
Ana Boone would come up big for Greenbrier and save the Pack from a Lassiter goal at 5:53.
Greenbrier is moving on to the Final Four for the first time since 2023.
“I think the biggest part of that is staying together and all of our teamwork and keeping each other like able on and off the field. When we make a mistake we just get up and go to the next play. We don’t hang ourselves over about it and just keeping each other up and not putting each other down. I think that’s really what helped us keep going at the end,” said Heckathorn.
Screven County girls soccer was on the hunt to advance, but were up against a challenging Atlanta Classical Academy team.
The Lady Gamecocks fell in the first round last season, this year they played host to elite eight. Screven fell just short, 2-1. It was the second time since 2022 that they have lost to the Cavs at this stage of the playoffs.
