Lieutenant governor visits Columbia County for legislative breakfast
EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones was in Columbia County for a post-legislative breakfast on Thursday.
Jones gave a recap of this year’s session. He spoke about updates on tort reform, property tax legislation and income tax reform.
Jones also highlighted how recent developments impact businesses and the economic outlook within the state.
GOP race for Ga. Senate seat begins after Buddy Carter launches bid
U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter on Thursday became the first Republican to jump into the race to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff in 2026, as other hopefuls maneuver following Gov. Brian Kemp’s announcement that he won’t seek the seat.
“It’s not hard, it’s all about leadership,” said Jones. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a church school or a business, it’s all about leadership, and the way it will grow all depends on the leaders and their vision for those communities.
After the event, Jones spoke highly of Columbia County’s economic development.

“This used to be a small community but because of all the good leadership they have here and all the right things they are doing, it attracted a good kind of growth and so now you have great school systems, you have great economic development and you have a safe community that wants to continue to thrive and prosper,” said Jones.
He says qualities like good business are key in people’s decision to relocate to Columbia County.
Ga. Gov. Brian Kemp signs public safety, hurricane relief legislation
Gov. Brian Kemp will sign two new bills into law at 11:30 a.m. at the new Georgia Public Safety Training Center.

“They care about good quality growth, and what that looks like is businesses, whether it’s a restaurant business or it’s a manufacturer or whatever it might be, you’ve got a little bit of everything here.”
Other leaders attending include the Columbia County Chamber board chair and the CEO of Doctors Hospital.
Jones has been serving as lieutenant governor for two years.
