Local church creates marker of civil rights trailblazer William Jefferson White
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A historical marker now bears the name of a civil rights trailblazer who spent most of his life in Augusta.
The masterpiece honors the Reverend Doctor William Jefferson White.
White served as an educational agent for the Freedmen’s Bureau.
He also founded Harmony Baptist Church and the now Morehouse College.
Evans Elementary School student found with knife on campus
An Evans Elementary School student was found with a knife, according to a letter sent to parents on Wednesday. This makes the second knife found on a Columbia County Schools campus this week.

White helped establish Augusta’s Ware High School and Georgia Baptist, which was a weekly African American newspaper that covered religious and civil rights issues.
We spoke to one of white’s great-great-granddaughters about this special honor.
“The thing that is most profound to me, that stands out, was the fact that he was a man of God, he was a minister of God, and he truly had a servant’s heart. That’s what really stands out above all the accomplishments,” said Bonnie Young.
“It’s incredible. The fact that the church is still standing so many years beyond its founding, when he founded it. It’s just an amazing thing that they would continue to celebrate him in the way that they do.”
The marker is located at Harmony Baptist Church.
