Taking a cruise to Mexico? You’ll now have to pay an extra fee
(Gray News) – If you’re going on a cruise to Mexico, be prepared to pay an extra fee from now on.
Mexico will be implementing a new cruise enger fee starting at $5 on July 1.
That’s down from the previously proposed $42 fee. The Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association said the fee was lowered following industry pushback, saying such high fees would deter visitors from cruising to Mexico.
“The concept, for example, of a family of four visiting a Mexican cruise port having to pay an additional $168 in fees for just a few hours ashore … will have far reaching impacts,” the FCCA said in a news release. “FCCA warns that placing such a burden on cruise tourists with minimal time actually spent in Mexico will deter visitors, alter cruise itineraries, and create economic ripple effects in communities that heavily rely on cruise tourism.”
However, although Mexico agreed to lower the fee to $5 per person, it is still expected to gradually increase over the next few years.
The fee will go up to $10 in 2026, $15 in 2027, and finally $21 in 2028.
According to Travel + Leisure, the fee will be added to the cost of the cruise upon booking.
USA Today reports that cruise engers were previously exempt from such taxes.
More than 10 million cruise engers are expected to visit Mexico in 2025, according to the FCCA.
