Autopsy finds South Carolina inmate died of natural causes

COLUMBIA, S.C. - State officials said an inmate at the Lee Correctional Institution died of natural causes.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said Leo Cheeks died of natural causes on Friday after being found unresponsive in his cell.

The agency said an autopsy confirmed his cause of death on Monday.

Cheeks’s death is also no longer being investigated as “suspicious,” per the SCDC.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is investigating a death at the Lee Correctional Institution.

Cheeks was found unresponsive in his cell.

Cheeks’ death was investigated by the Corrections Department’s Inspector General’s office, with assistance from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division’s crime scene unit and the Lee County coroner.
