DOGE dismantles Consumer Product Safety Commission
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The Consumer Product Safety Commission does just that.
“The cost of making them safe is minuscule. The cost of failing to make them safe is horrendous,” warned Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal.
Blumnethal is sounding the alarm of what he calls illegal firings of three commissioners tasked with keeping harmful products off American shelves.
“You may never have heard of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but it literally has taken harmful products out of your home. Destructive products away from your children before they cause injury or death.”
The agency is responsible for recalling harmful toys like water beads, which can be deadly if swallowed. Or flat pool drains, responsible for catastrophic injury and hundreds of child deaths.
The legality of these firings by the Trump istration is being challenged in court - but the White House insists its well within their jurisdiction.
“It’s a federal agency within which branch? It’s the executive branch. Who’s the head of the executive branch? The President of the United States. He has the Congress he has the right to fire people within the executive branch,” said WH Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
As the battle plays out in court, commissioners warn American consumers no longer have watchdogs.
“These cuts. Let me be clear. Well, harm American people. They’re going to result in more trips to the emergency room and ultimately more deaths,” said fired commissioner Alexander Hoehn-Saric.
