Grovetown hires state winning basketball coach
GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Grovetown High School basketball is entering a new era under the leadership of a seasoned coach.
The Warriors have hired former Westside head coach Jerry Hunter to take over the program. Hunter brings a strong coaching pedigree, having previously led Laney High School to a state championship in 2012. During his time at Laney, he compiled an impressive 77-15 record.
After stepping down as Laney’s head basketball coach, Hunter remained involved in the school’s athletic programs, working with the baseball team before returning to the basketball sidelines at Westside in 2019. There, he transformed a struggling program into a GHSA powerhouse, guiding the Patriots to three consecutive GHSA Class AA state championships.
Hunter takes the reins following the departure of former Grovetown head coach Darren Douglas, who led the Warriors to a Class AAAAAA state championship during the 2021-2022 season.
Grovetown continues to build its reputation as a breeding ground for top-tier talent, most recently producing Division I signees Derrion Reid and Frankquon Sherman.
