FEMA says the agency is ‘not necessarily’ unprepared for hurricane season
(CNN) – FEMA’s acting chief said the agency is “not necessarily” unprepared for hurricane season which begins June 1.
CNN reviewed a recording of a call acting David Richardson had with his staff.
Richardson said the agency will likely face more reforms and major staffing cuts in the months ahead.
According to an internal review, FEMA has minimal coordination with states right now and is dealing with new red tape that will probably slow emergency responses.
That review also notes low morale and agency mission uncertainty.
The Trump istration has repeatedly called FEMA ineffective and unnecessary.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s agency oversees FEMA. She has previously said she wants to eliminate it.
FEMA lost about 30% of its full-time staff since the start of the Trump istration due to layoffs and employee buyouts.
“FEMA is fully activated in preparation for Hurricane Season," a statement from the agency said.
