PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) – A father died in Colorado Wednesday afternoon after trying to save several children who were struggling in the water, according to a spokesperson for Lake Pueblo State Park.

Officials said four children were swimming in the lake and began struggling as the wind and waves picked up.

According to authorities, two of the children were the man’s kids and two were friends.

The 53-year-old man went into the lake to help them but also began to struggle. By the time he could be pulled to safety, authorities said he had already started going under the water.

Lake officials and responders attempted R for approximately 40 minutes, but he died at the scene.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said the man did not have a life jacket on at the time of the incident, and the water was very cold, at around 50 degrees.

According to W, the children are all safe and with their guardians.

“W offers condolences to the family and friends of the victim and everyone involved in the incident,” Lake Pueblo State Park Operations Manager Becky Buist said.

Officials said the coroner will make the official determination of the man’s cause of death. His identity was not released.
