BioLab won’t reopen Ga. plant that spewed plume of toxic smoke

ATLANTA, Ga. - The BioLab plant in Conyers will not reopen its manufacturing facility after a massive September 2024 chemical fire erupted there, the company said Friday.

“After taking steps to meet customer needs through alternative production, and in considering our future business needs carefully, we have made the difficult decision to not restart manufacturing at the Conyers plant,” BioLab officials said in a statement.

BioLab officials said over the last several months, they have made “significant progress on cleaning up the Conyers site and has now completed its remediation of the facility affected by the fire.”

While manufacturing will not resume, officials said the Conyers Distribution Center will still operate and “continue to fulfill customer orders for finished products from other manufacturing facilities.”

On Friday afternoon, inmates continued the cleanup of the Augusta Riverwalk. City officials say that the public to be patient regarding the reopening.

“In light of our difficult decision to not restart manufacturing in Conyers, we will be eliminating certain roles at the plant,” BioLab officials said in a statement. “A subset of employees that ed manufacturing operations will remain with the company to assist with transition activities, and employees ing the distribution center will not be impacted as it continues to operate as usual.”

Rockdale County officials said BioLab will keep 100 jobs despite shuttering its manufacturing operations.

In late September, a fire at the plant caused a large plume of toxic chemicals to float across several metro Atlanta counties.
