The program, through the Department of Veterans Affairs, has helped about 20,000 veterans avoid and keep their homes since it began over a year ago.

The Trump istration’s cancellation of the program comes as nearly 90,000 VA loans are seriously past due, with 33,000 of those already in the foreclosure process, according to NPR.

VA benefits have been earned by those who have served. These are not handouts. These are not giveaways. This is a contract between those who put on the uniform and make immense sacrifices, and their families make immense sacrifices to defend the nation and the rest of us who benefit from their service,” Ossoff said. “This is a contract. This is an obligation. Veterans have earned their benefits, and the American people and Georgians overwhelmingly our veterans and veterans’ benefits.”

McCrary said ending the program would put 80,000 veterans at risk of foreclosure.
