AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Cleanup continued at the Augusta Riverwalk Friday afternoon.

City officials shut down the riverwalk to clear hurricane debris.

Officials say initial debris removal was completed shortly after the hurricane, but large debris like tree stumps and root balls were still there.

Inmates are hard at work, using heavy equipment to restore the riverwalk to life.

The director of Augusta Parks and Recreation is urging you to be patient while they work.

“We’re trying to get out here to get this work done as quickly as possible. With the crews that we have, we ask that the public be patient with us while we’re getting through this, and then we want to make it as safe as possible. So if you’re thinking about coming to the river, I’ll just wait a little bit longer before we come out, we will. And that way, we can open it back up,” said Tameka Williams.

Cleanup is expected to last about two weeks, so the riverwalk is expected to reopen on May 27.

The Saturday market will still operate at its normal time and location.
