Firefighter dies responding to devastating tornado damage

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT/Gray News) – A firefighter in Kentucky died Saturday morning after being injured while responding to storm damage.

The Laurel County Fire Department confirmed the death of Major Leslie Roger Leatherman in a post on social media.

According to the fire department, Letherman was a “dedicated public servant for 39 years.”

“His courage, commitment, and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the fire department said in its post.

The department did not share what types of injuries Leatherman sustained while responding to the devastating tornado in Laurel County Friday.

At least 19 people were killed and 10 were seriously injured. 0fficials said the death toll could rise and that three people remained in critical condition Sunday.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers our first responders face every day and the incredible bravery they show in the face of disaster,” the fire department said.
