SAFETY ALERT: Phone scammers duping Augustans out of a fortune
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says local residents are losing thousands of dollars to sophisticated phone scams as callers convince them a loved one needs their help.
Elderly people are the scammers’ key prey.
The scammers are using public records like arrest reports, jail bookings and court information to dupe people into believing a loved one is in jail, injured or facing imminent arrest, deputies said.
Body found in shallow grave under Augusta’s 15th Street bridge
A body was found in a shallow grave near the 15th Street bridge near Riverwatch Parkway on Tuesday evening, according to Richmond County deputies.

The scammers can manipulate caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from a legitimate government agency.
Victims have lost thousands of dollars — often after being told to send money through wire transfers, gift cards or other untraceable means.
Elderly residents are among the most frequent targets, as scammers often exploit their concern for family and lack of familiarity with these types of fraud.
What the Tech: Sextortion warning signs experts say could save lives
Many victims never tell a parent or report it to police. But there are signs, and knowing what to look for could save your child.
Sheriff Eugene Brantley urges the public to be vigilant.
“No law enforcement agency or government office will ever call demanding payment over the phone for bail, fines, or citations. If you receive a call like this — hang up immediately,” he said. “If you are still concerned, look up the agency’s official phone number and them directly.”
Deputies urge families to talk with elderly relatives and others who may be more vulnerable to scams. Open conversations can help prevent them from becoming the next victim.
