AIKEN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - There were plenty of changes this off-season when it comes to high school football.

Many teams are under new leadership.

As much as it was a surprise that Steve Hibbitts from Lakeside was taking the Aiken job, it probably shouldn’t be.

After a decade’s worth of losing seasons for Aiken’s football program, the hometown coach is ready to put the green hornets back in the state title buzz.

“It’s been cool to make some reconnections with people and just see the excitement on this side of town. This side of town is ready for this,” said Hibbitts.

Steve Hibbetts has spent the last 15 years of his career in the GHSA, coaching Westside for four years, and Lakeside for the last 11.

Now, he’s back in the Palmetto State with a new task at hand.

“I think it’s going to be a wonderful challenge, and it’s going to be an adventure, and we’re going to have a blast with it. Really, in the end, it’s all about the players. It was all about the players at Lakeside, and it’s going to be all about the players here at Aiken,” said Hibbitts.

Hibbitts says he wasn’t able to bring any old of his coaching staff with him to Aiken, but he was named the GHSA 5A coach of the year last season.

So, it wasn’t hard for him to get a new staff put together quickly.

“I was able to make some reconnections with some guys around here. I had some other people reach out to me, and they’re just the best group of guys for this job, and they’re going to do awesome. It’s been cool to make some reconnections with people and just see the excitement on this side of town. This side of town is ready for this,” said Hibbitts.

Hibbitts and the Hornets will be seeking Aiken’s first state title since 1992.

All of that starts Thursday night in the spring scrimmage.

All of our seniors are ready to get after it because even them not experiencing success over the last couple of years they’re just ready to play again, and they just want to compete. They love to play, and we just want to exhibit that,” said Hibbitts.
