AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - With Memorial Day just days away, we’re hearing from Army leaders at Fort Eisenhower about how they plan to celebrate the branch’s big birthday this year.

On June 14th, the army turns 250 years old, which is older than the country itself.

Command Sergeant Timothy McGuire tells us their plans to mark the occasion.

“We’re gonna be celebrating Army Heritage Month on base and we’re gonna be highlighting our units, their history, their lineage and having some guest speakers and recognizing some of our service and civilians,” said McGuire.

That celebration is set for June 6.

Ahead of Memorial Day Monday, we heard from the Commanding General of the Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Eisenhower.

Major General Ryan Janovic says Memorial Day is important, especially for our community, a military community, as we have so many veterans in our area.

It’s not about service, sure it marks the unofficial start of summer, but the holiday is a somber one.

“We celebrate the armed forces in many different ways, but Memorial Day is unique in that it’s the time that our nation quiets itself and thinks about those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the nation. As we think about the length of our Army Service, 250 years, as we are going to think about this year, always ing those who gave the ultimate sacrifice is important for our legacy, for our profession, and for our communities,″ said Major General Ryan Janovic.

“Our installation, the men and women who work on Fort Eisenhower, and those who come aboard every day to do training and go out across our army are part of the fabric of this community. And we have veterans in the community. We have families that live in these communities. And they all have wrapped their arms around the soldiers who train and those who work. So I think we’re integral to what happens here, both in Augusta and across the greater CSRA,” said Janovic.

Janovic assumed the position of Commanding General of Fort Eisenhower in August 2024.
