Man kills stepson during argument over Fortnite, police say
DAVENPORT, Fla. (Gray News) – A man is accused of killing his stepson Wednesday night when an argument over Fortnite escalated into a shooting, police said.
According to Davenport Police Chief Steve Parker, a 9-year-old was playing Fortnite at home on a cell phone when his mother, Adriane Daza, learned he was playing the game. His mom had previously said he was not allowed to play Fortnite, so she took the phone away from her son.
Police said the 9-year-old became upset and went into the nightstand in his mother’s room and took out a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun from its drawer.
Daza immediately tried to take the gun away from her son when her husband, Kelly Agar Garica, came into the room and was able to help. Parker said Garica was able to get the gun from his stepson.
According to police, that’s when Daza’s biological 26-year-old son, Azareel J. Martinez, came into the room and began arguing with Garcia.
Authorities said Garcia shot Martinez several times before he collapsed.
Martinez was taken to the hospital, where he did.
Garcia has been charged with second-degree murder and allowing a minor access to an unsecured firearm.
