WATERBURY, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) - Police responded to a “shooting incident” on Tuesday afternoon at a mall in Waterbury, Connecticut.

State police assisted Waterbury officers with the shooting at Brass Mill Center mall, which was first reported at approximately 4:40 p.m.

During a Tuesday evening update with law enforcement, the Waterbury police chief said five people were injured by gunfire.

The victims were transported to area hospitals, but their injuries were believed to be non-life threatening.

Police say a person of interest has been taken into custody.

The shooting is still under investigation, but police said it’s initially believed to have stemmed from an altercation at the mall.

“We do not believe this was a random act of violence,” the police chief said.

The gunman was armed with a semi-automatic pistol.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, but police did not say if it was the one used during the shooting.

“They were trying to find a person who was in Jenney, and it was like four victims,” eyewitness Jayvon Turner described. “Then, there was a little girl got shot, and she was losing a lot of blood. It was crazy, and I tried to tell everybody to get out of there. It was really emotional and crazy.”

Police say that the area has been secured, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Gov. Ned Lamont released the following statement on the shooting:

“This afternoon there was a tragic mass shooting at the Bass Mill Center mall in Waterbury, a place where everyone should feel safe. We are grateful to law enforcement, who acted swiftly. Details are still forthcoming, but the Connecticut State Police will be assisting Waterbury Police with the investigation. Our hearts break for the Waterbury community, the victims, and their families who have been impacted by this incident.”
