Aiken County Detention Center recognizes graduates

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Detention Center celebrated their graduates Tuesday.

14 GED students received recognition for their hard work — and got their diplomas.

News 12 spoke with GED teacher Kathleen Ross.

She says earning a GED is a challenge, and the program teaches skills that last long past graduation.

Aiken County speller eliminated in 1st round at national bee

The best young spellers in the English language are competing this week at the Scripps National Spelling Bee – and one of them is a kid from Aiken County.

“They have developed a big work ethic – because, as they said during the ceremony, getting your GED is very difficult. And so, they’ve had to work really hard, not just during my class time, but during their rec time and things like that, they’ve had to do book work.”

Ross say she is “really proud” of her graduates.

The 14 students who got their diplomas five others who graduated last year.
