North Augusta doesn’t get grant to help Palmetto Trailway Project
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The city of North Augusta was not awarded a grant to improve the Palmetto Trailway Project, we learned on Wednesday.
The city held a public hearing back in January on whether to apply for the $100,000 Recreation Trails Program Grant.
The North Augusta City Council unanimously approved the grant application in February.
If awarded, the plan would have included an asphalt parking lot, ADA accessibility and a privacy shelter and kiosk.

The application period ended February 7, and North Augusta Parks and Recreation Director Rick Meyer said North Augusta’s application was hard to sell to the department.
The city’s application went up against 20 other projects that focused on either the resurfacing of a trail or the paving of a new trail entirely.
Meyer says that receiving this grant would have been merely Phase One in what would be an ongoing effort to boost the popular trail.
Meyer tells News 12 that the city has the option to resubmit for the Recreation and Trails Grant in 2026 for the Palmetto Parkway Trailhead.
