Teen was learning to drive when she crashed off embankment and killed father, police say
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (KCAL/KCBS) - A California man died Monday while teaching his teenage daughter to drive.
Authorities in Laguna Beach say a pedal mix-up may be to blame.
Police say the car careened off an embankment near a parking lot, falling about 40 feet.
“It appeared to be on a permitted driver, 15-year-old female driver with her father out, essentially, in a driving lesson sort of situation,” Lt. Jesse Schmidt, with Laguna Beach police, said. “Gas pedal, brake pedal confusion, and tumbled over a 40-foot cliff on the Coast Highway.”
The 64-year-old man died at the scene.
The 15-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital with significant injuries, but she is expected to survive.
