GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Kroger’s Augusta-area grocery baggers raced to win a spot in the company’s annual Georgia Bag-Off competition.

They battled in a local bagging showdown Thursday morning at the Kroger Grovetown Marketplace, 435 Lewiston Road.

The best baggers in a Kroger district ranging from Athens to Columbia all converged on the Kroger Marketplace in Grovetown to see who’d take the title.

They competed with both plastic bags and reusable ones, filling them with an assortment of 35 to 40 items.

“An item second is pretty quick, so 40 seconds is one of the faster times we’ve had,” said Dylan Seagraves, district operations specialist with Kroger.

But speed was only one of the criteria. Competitors were also judged on the proper way to load a grocery bag, distribution of weight between bags, technique, overall style, appearance and attitude.

The theme for the day was racing for each of the contenders, who spend at least 40% of their time at work bagging groceries for customers.

With co-workers and families cheering them on, the competitors donned their best racing attire and competitive spirit.

“These contestants are truly the best of the best Kroger baggers in the area,” said Tammie Young-Ennaemba, corporate affairs manager for Kroger’s Atlanta Division.
