(Gray News) - Officials are warning that ground beef sold at Whole Foods markets nationwide might be contaminated with E. coli.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a public health alert for select ground beef products sold at Whole Foods over the risk of contamination.

According to the alert, the products are 1-pound packages of Organic Rancher 85% lean ground beef that have use or freeze-by dates of June 19 or June 20.

U.S. agriculture officials said the raw ground beef is no longer available for purchase, but people may still have it in their freezers or refrigerators.

The product was shipped to distributor locations in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and Maryland and was further distributed to Whole Foods Market retail locations nationwide.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of anyone getting sick, but urged consumers not to use the meat and to throw it away or return it immediately.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, diarrhea and abdominal cramps for several days after the initial exposure, health officials said.
