42-year-old dies days after single-car crash in Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of a Windsor man after a single-car crash that occurred days earlier.

On Sunday, around 8:15 p.m., the coroner’s office says it responded to Wellstar MCG Health to investigate the death of 42-year-old Wade Sweat III, who was involved in a single-vehicle crash on June 2.

The crash happened at 10:12 a.m. on the 1400 block of Old Barnwell Road near Stillwater Road, according to the coroner’s office.

One of several suspects has been sentenced in a Richmond County sex slave case from 2022 involving a 20-year-old woman being forced to live in a dog cage.

Sweat was the driver of a 1994 Chevrolet truck traveling north on Old Barnwell Road when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway, overcorrected, traveled off the right side of the roadway, overturned and then struck a fence.

EMS transported Sweat to Wellstar MCG Health, where he succumbed to his injuries at 5:45 p.m.

The coroner’s office, along with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, are continuing with the investigation.
