AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - One of several suspects has been sentenced to confinement and probation in a Richmond County case from 2022 involving a woman being forced to live in a dog cage as a “sex slave.”

The key offender killed herself in jail more than two years ago. But she was just one of several people charged.

One of those suspects, Anjelika Figueroa, 32, was sentenced last week to 15 years in prison and 24 years of probation after itting to several of the charges against her. We’re working to learn whether the are concurrent or consecutive.

She’d faced charges of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and violation of a street gang law.

The kidnapping and street gang charges were dropped when she pleaded guilty to the other charges.

The key offender, Shonna Powell, 32, was found dead in her jail cell in December 2022.

Powell was accused of locking a woman in a dog cage at a home in the 2200 block of Nellie Drive.

The key suspect in a recent Richmond County sex slave case has committed suicide in jail, according to authorities.

Deputies said Powell told a visitor at the home: “She stole a bunch of stuff from me so she is going to be my sex slave and I am going to pimp her out until she pays it off.”

The visitor “stated that he heard a person state that multiple unknown individuals were en route to ‘have their way with her,’” deputies wrote in a report.

The visitor, a former resident of the mobile home who’d gone there to pick up some property he’d left behind, called deputies to report the incident involving the caged woman, who appeared to have been beaten.

Deputies rescued the woman and arrested five people, including Powell and Figueroa.
