What Augusta’s new garbage contract means for your wallet
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Augusta commissioners signed on to a new garbage contract after months of back and forth.
The new contract with Coastal Waste Recycling means one entity will pick up trash and recycling for the city.
However, the 5-year contract only covers trash disposal.
Despite it looking like rates will increase on paper, Dr. Hameed Malik, the director of engineering, insists it won’t; He says recycling is the only thing that changes under this new plan.
SC Attorney General announces settlement against company for role in opioid crisis
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced a major settlement against one of the largest companies who manufactured opioids.

If you choose to add recycling — which the city currently does not offer — it’ll cost an extra $12 per month.
“The contracts, the two separate things, and that’s where the confusion is. What the city charges to the residents is totally separate,” Dr. Malik explains. “So, it is up to the city management when they want to revisit those rates because those rates were set back in 2013, and the cost has been escalating. It’s up to the city when they want to revisit the rate; If they want to reset it or they don’t want to reset it.”
If residents want recycling to be picked up, they will have to reach out to Coastal Waste Recycling and pay the month fee associated with the type of lot.
Ossoff wants to hear from families about military housing problems
In 2022, Sen. Jon Ossoff’s bipartisan investigation highlighted the mistreatment of military families living in privatized housing on Fort Eisenhower, as reported by News 12 for a decade.

There are three payment types: weekly, bimonthly, and monthly. Weekly costs $14.69, bimonthly costs $13.69, and monthly costs $12.69.
Tuesday night, News 12 couldn’t get a straight answer as to exactly how your bill will change.
All we know is - the new contract has been approved -- and will start August 1.
Dr. Malik says within the next 60 days -- they will provide information on how to add recycling.
