AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A new half-penny sales tax is in effect to help pay for a new James Brown Arena.

In November, voters approved the project with 66% of people saying yes.

The Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority looks to fund the project with a bond that is not tax-exempt for fewer restrictions.

This plan does not raise property taxes.

Demolition of the old arena is expected to start in July.

Voters had previously turned down a plan to build a new arena, but the funding proposal was tweaked into a sales tax, and voters approved the new proposal.
